Beer Festival!

Hello all,

If anyone is interested there is a beer and cider festival at Magna this Wednesday-Saturday. Myself and a few others are going on Saturday afternoon to celebrate my birthday if anyone would like to join us. (http://www.magnarealale.co.uk/venue.htm) Tickets are £8 and there is a direct bus from Sheffield interchange (the No.69 – http://www.visitmagna.co.uk/findus.php).

It’d be great to some of you (or all of you) there!

Cheers,

Jen

Conference on “Advances in Ecological Speciation” (29-30 April, Portugal)

Hi all,

We are organising this conference in CIBIO (close to Porto, Portugal). Check our website http://www.aes-cibio.org/, it is very cool!. The conference is very cheap and lowcost companies fly to Porto’s airport. If you know of someone that could be interested please forward the information of the conference and please join our Facebook or post the link in your account so your friends could read it. Thanks a lot for your help! Best
Juanito

4th Annual Manchester Molecular and Genome Evolution Symposium / 17 May 2013

Please save the date for the Fourth Annual Manchester Molecular and Genome Evolution (MaGE) Symposium to be held 17 May 2013. This annual symposium is an informal and friendly one-day meeting for those interested in Molecular and Genome Evolution from either the computational or experimental perspective.

We currently have two confirmed guest speakers for this year’s symposium: Judith Mank from UCL (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/mank-group/) and Lisa Crossman from TGAC (http://www.tgac.ac.uk/bioinformatics/genome-analysis/lisa-crossman/). The remaining talks on the day will be chosen from those submitted, with a preference towards student and postdoc presentations, interspersed with the selection of titles from other more senior researchers in Manchester (and beyond). There will be prizes for the best submitted talk and the best poster.

Please use the form at this link (http://tinyurl.com/ManMage2013) to register and submit abstracts for talks and posters. We hope to see you in May!

Many thanks,
Casey & Douda

March 5th Mol Ecol meeting, now 10-11.30 in B52

Hi all,
Jenny has kindly offered to give her talk at next month’s lab meeting (Tuesday March 5th) since she was snowed in yesterday. So please note that the meeting may be a little longer than usual as we have three speakers – Jenny, Hannah and Karl (I’ve booked B52 until 11.30).
Thanks!
Anna :)

Reminder: Talk, 13:00 Wed 6 Feb, B52

I’ll be practicing my talk for the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship (Sheffield), tomorrow Wed 6 Feb at 13:00 (providing I don’t get snowed in again!)

Title: Evolution of cooperative breeding behaviour

It’s a 20 min talk aimed at level 3 undergrads. The actual talks are Wed 13th, and I’d really appreciate feedback from you on how to improve my talk

Thanks Hannah

NGen assembly computer now in lab

Hi all,
the computer that holds the NGen assembly software has now been moved from our office to the lab (with the other lab computers in the window). It has a purple sticker on the screen with “NGen assembly” on it.
Note that this computer has a dual-boot system with both Windows and Linux. To launch in Windows, turn it on and watch out for the selection screen and then use the arrow key to scroll down and select windows. It will default to starting in Linux so if you aren’t quick enough you’ll have to restart!
While you are welcome to use this computer for your other analyses in windows / linux (the linux login details are stuck on the computer) please note that assembly takes priority as it is the only computer with a licence for this software. Please remove your own data from this computer as soon as you are finished; storing large datasets seems to significantly slow down the assembly for the next user. Please also don’t install programs that use a lot of space, thanks!
(If you are looking for the external hard drive it is currently in our office, B1-217).
Any questions please let me know. Thanks!
Anna :)
