Congratulations to Bilal and family

Bilal’s wife had a baby boy on Tuesday night (2 weeks late).
It was a normal delivery and all went well. Mum, Dad and Sister are all delighted.

Special seminar on genomics of speciation, this Thursday August 7th

Hello All,

A candidate for a post-doctoral position in our lab will be visiting APS this Thursday, August 7th. She has worked on empirical analyses of genome variation in hybrid zones (e.g., in Populus with Christian Lexer) and on theoretical models of genomic architecture and speciation (e.g., with Alex Buerkle). She will be giving a 30 minute seminar on her research at 4pm in the common room (this Thursday). All all welcome so spread the news. Drinks to follow in the pub around 5pm.

cheers,

Patrik

Football every Wednesday

Hi all,

this is a call for people that want to make a bit of fun sport every weeks. Each Wednesday afternoon, we organize a football session for lab people on Goodwin centre pitches (usually at 17:00). The ambiance is really cool as fun is the main purpose. The participation fees are £3 per person and there is no obligation to come assiduously (just come when you feel so and pay as you go)!

If you are interested, please send me an email to l.duvaux@shef.ac.uk in order to be added to the mailing list (I’ll send an email every weeks to ask who is in a football mood).
Feel free to spread this information to any new member of the lab or friends of yours that might be interested.

Cheers,

Ludovic

Festival of the Mind – volunteers?

Most of you are probably aware already of the Festival of the Mind, happening in Sheffield soon (http://festivalofthemind.group.shef.ac.uk/).

We (the lab) are running two events on Researcher’s Night (Friday 28th Sept).
I’ll be helping out on Kids’ Labs, in the B1 teaching labs, where we will be extracting our own DNA and playing Genome Top Trumps.

Andy will be showcasing research in the TABLAB as part of the Department’s Research Demonstrations.

It is likely that both of us would benefit from some helpers, so please get in touch if interestesd.  Even if you cannot help out on the night, I’m keen to trail a fruit juice/washing-up liquid/salt method of DNA extraction and it would be great to get some volunteers for that. I’d like to try it out at 2.30 PM on Thursday. Meet in the locker room if you want to give it a go.

Sponsor Jon in the London Marathon

Hi all,
I am running the London Marathon in April and hope to raise money for an organisation called IntoUniversity. They do excellent work helping disadvantaged young people go into Higher Education, and therefore help to narrow the participation gap in UK universities.

I’d be very grateful for any support you can give (financial or moral!)

Many thanks, Jon

ps – I wasn’t sure what category to put this under. Training, perhaps?

Birthday beers

A few of us are planning to go out for a few drinks at the Devonshire Cat pub on Wednesday 17th August from about 5.30 onwards. We’re using Cheryl’s (NBAF visitor) birthday as an excuse to go out so would be great to see lots of you there.

Beer and burger?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone fancied going out for a beer and a burger at the Dev Cat on Wednesday evening?  I know it’s a school night so am not proposing anything too crazy, just a few drinks and some nice grub.  Probably aim to wander down there straight after work….

Cheers, Raisin

Friday Beer? Rude not to really…..

Hi all,

Anyone fancy a post-work beverage tomorrow night?  We were thinking of heading down to the Dev Cat sometime after 4.30…..

Hope to see you there,

Rachel, Raisin and Filipa

Raj’s leaving do – this Thursday!

Hi All,

After over ten-and-a-half years at Sheffield and the Mol Ecol Lab, I’m moving on to pastures new. You are all welcome/ invited/ compelled to come and celebrate (finally getting rid of me) or mourn (my departure) on Thursday 10 March, 530 pm. There is no firm plan as yet but it will inevitably involve pubs, ale and food. Please let me know by reply to this post or by email (r.whitlock@…) if you plan to come along (partners/ offspring/ other welcome) so I can think about whether we need to book somewhere for the food.
