Accommodation needed, Feb-May 2015

**Message from Kay Lucek, postdoc in the group of Patrik Nosil, starting in February 2015**

I am a male postdoctoral researcher looking for a cheap room in Sheffield from February until May 2015. As I will visit my family, I will be away most weekends. I have modest requirements and mainly need a place to sleep, ideally in cycling distance to the University Campus and the train station. Please contact me under kay.lucek@eawag.ch

Lab meeting tomorrow (4 Nov), 11:30 am, Common Room

Dear all,

Please remember our Molecular Ecology Lab meeting tomorrow (4 Nov) at 11:30 am in the Common Room, Alfred Denny Building, APS. The two speakers will be:

1) Suo Qiu. “Understanding the genomic basis of virulence in the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica”. She is a research postdoctoral associate working in collaboration with Julia Scholes and Roger Butlin.

Striga species are parasitic weeds that infect the roots of the staple cereal crops of Africa causing devastating yield losses. Striga-resistant cultivars are cost-effective for subsistence farmers but knowledge about genetic variation for virulence within Striga populations is poor, making sustainable management of host-resistant cultivars difficult. We aim to use population genomic approaches to locate virulence loci within the Striga genome that allow parasites to overcome host resistance genes.

2) Kang-Wook Kim. “What makes longer and faster sperm?”. He is a research postdoctoral associate.

Available dates to give talks next year are:
– January 6th
– February 3rd
– March 3rd
Please let me know if you would like to give a talk.

Best wishes,

Mauricio

Lab meeting tomorrow 7 Oct 2014, 11:30 am, Common Room

Dear all,

This is a reminder of our next Molecular Ecology Lab meeting taking place tomorrow 7 Oct 2014 at 11:30 am in the Common Room (D floor, APS department). The two speakers will be Kyle Martin and Kei Matsubayashi.

Kyle is a research associate in Gareth Fraser’s group working on tooth and denticle development in sharks, skates and rays using development methods. His talk title is “Evolution and Development of Vertebrate Teeth: the role of stem cells in regulating continuous tooth regeneration in chondrichthyans”.

Kei is a JSPS post-doctoral fellow for Research Abroad in Patrik Nosil’s group studying the ecological and genetic mechanisms of diversification, focusing on ecological speciation and adaptive radiation. His talk title is “Parallel speciation caused by ecological hybrid speciation in the phytophagous ladybird beetle”.

I am afraid that November and December meetings are fully booked, but should you wish to give a talk at one of these meetings, the following dates are available:
– January 6th
– February 3rd
– March 3rd

January 6th might be of special interest to those presenting at the Population Genetics Group (PopGroup) since you could use this lab meeting to practice your talk.

As always, please do let me know of new members in your groups who need to be added to this list. Also, let me know if you have left and no longer requiere to be in this list.

Best wishes,

Mauricio
